Treatment for TMJ Disorders
TMJ disorders affect the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and jaw muscles that make it possible to open and close your mouth. There are multiple causes for TMJ pain, including tooth and jaw alignment, arthritis, injury, stress, teeth grinding, and even jaw dislocation.
To assess what might be the cause of your pain, we’ll conduct a thorough examination to identify tenderness in the jaw muscles, popping, clicking, or difficulty moving. Depending on your situation, we’ll determine the proper treatment to help eliminate your pain.
Treatment of TMJ varies from patient to patient but may include:
- Eating softer foods
- Avoiding nail biting or chewing gum
- Use of relaxation exercises to reduce stress and tension in the jaws
- Wearing a night guard or bite plate
- Fixing an uneven bite
- Adjusting or reshaping some teeth
Imagine being able to smile without having to worry about gaps from missing teeth or being able to eat the foods you want without a second thought. With our restorative options, Dr. Heffelfinger can bring full function and beauty back to your smile.
Tooth-colored Restorations: Fillings, Onlays, and Crowns
Whether you need a cavity repaired, an old filling replaced, or a tooth restored with a crown, we offer tooth-colored restorations that blend in with the rest of your smile. Using our advanced, in-house fabrication technology, we’re happy to offer same day crowns and inlays. This means you won’t have to wait weeks while a dental laboratory makes your restoration. We can make then right here in our office so you can leave your appointment with a fully restored smile.
If you need one or more teeth replaced, there’s no better option than dental implants. They look, feel, and function much like natural teeth. The implant is placed in the jawbone and takes the place of the missing tooth’s root, where it forms a strong foundation for your restoration.
With dental implants, Dr. Heffelfinger can replace one, several, or a full arch of missing teeth. For some people in need of a full arch replacement, we can use the Teeth in a Day treatment process so you can have your replacement teeth placed the same day as your implants.

Tooth Replacement: Bridges, Partial Dentures and Dentures
In addition to dental implants, Dr. Heffelfinger also offers traditional and removable tooth replacements.
A dental bridge is a good choice when one or several adjacent teeth are missing. The bridge is made up of one or more replacement teeth held in place with dental crowns that are placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
A partial denture can be designed to fit your unique tooth replacement needs. It’s typically held in place by fitting over surrounding healthy teeth and can be removed for cleaning.
For patients who are missing a full arch of teeth, Dr. Heffelfinger is happy to provide his patented Zircobite® dentures. Seeing a need for a better denture, Dr. Heffelfinger teamed up with Stoller Dental Lab to create this denture system that doesn’t wear down as quickly as traditional acrylic dentures. Zircobite® uses high-quality zirconium, which is much stronger than acrylic.
Many patients who get a Zircobite® denture say they can eat foods that were too difficult to eat before treatment. They also report that Zircobite® dentures look and feel much more like natural teeth and they don’t wear down as quickly compared to their traditional dentures.
We want all of our patients to love the way their smile looks. If you’re not happy with what you see in the mirror, we offer a wide range of cosmetic treatments, from whitening to a full smile makeover.
Digital Smile Design & Planning
Using state-of-the-art digital design software, we’ll work with you to create the smile you’ve always desired. Our technology allows you to see your smile from a new perspective and helps Dr. Heffelfinger to clearly understand what you like and dislike about it. Instead of waiting weeks to see what your new smile is going to look like, we can digitally generate images and ensure that, together, we’re creating a plan to meet your health needs and keep you smiling for years to come.
Gagging shouldn’t be your first thought when it comes to visiting the dentist. Digital technology makes old impression methods a thing of the past. In addition to reducing the discomfort associated with getting an impression, digital impressions give us a more precise view of your bite, ensuring a proper fit with fewer adjustments. Less time in the chair means more time for people to admire your smile. This is just one of our services that will give you comfort knowing you’re getting the best dental treatment available in Auburn.
At Smiles for Life, innovation comes standard. We’re using the latest technology to make your experience in the chair pain and worry-free. The video below shows you how dental technology is helping us serve you better and gives you a peek at how technology is changing the way we get a digital impression of your teeth.
